Due to the potential for civil unrest and large public gatherings in various cities, drivers may encounter unexpected traffic disruptions or unsafe conditions.
Our top priority is the safety of our drivers.
Please keep in mind the following best practices when responding to civil unrest, regardless of when/where.
🗺️ Plan Your Route: Before you start driving and during breaks, check your route for planned protest activity. Focus on major cities, downtown areas, and locations with government buildings. Have alternate routes in mind to avoid these areas. Strategic rerouting around downtown areas may be warranted. Do not treat this as a normal traffic delay.
📰 Stay Informed: Monitor local news and traffic reports for the areas you are traveling through. This is the best way to get real-time information on road closures and protest locations.
🛑 Avoid Protest Areas: Do not attempt to drive through a protest or large gathering. A tractor-trailer is a large target and can escalate a volatile situation. Your safety is the priority. If you encounter a protest, find a safe place to stop and immediately contact dispatch to determine a new route.
🔒 Stay Secure in the Cab: Drivers should remain in their vehicle with the doors locked and windows rolled up. Their cab is the safest place to be.
🅿️ Park Securely: Choose your parking spots with care. Avoid stopping for your breaks or for the night in secluded lots, shopping centers, or near government buildings and police stations. Use well-lit, secure truck stops or KNX company facilities whenever possible.
🕊️ Neutrality is Key: Do not engage with protestors in any way, whether through gestures, words, or honking. Remain neutral and do not draw attention to the vehicle.
🔄 Create Distance Safely: If a safe opportunity exists, take the first available turn or exit to leave the area.
📞 Communicate with Us: If a protest blocks your route or prevents a safe pickup or delivery, contact your Driver Manager or after-hours dispatch right away. We will support you with rerouting and customer communication.
⛑️ Trust Your Judgment: Be aware of your surroundings. If a situation feels unsafe, it probably is. If you have security concerns, call your Driver Manager or the 24/7 Knight-Swift Security Operations Team at 623-907-7744.
If a driver is ever in immediate danger, they should call 911 before contacting the company.
