FUEL MANAGEMENT

WHY MANAGE FUEL?

Fuel is one of the largest costs for our entire company and it requires constant attention and effort to improve our fuel economy and reduce extra cost. The better we manage fuel, means more money in drivers' pockets.

Knight expects driving associates to achieve the best performance they can when it comes to fuel economy. Our minimum expectation to maintain employment with Knight is 6.5 mpg.

CALCULATING FUEL

Knight measures fuel economy using a Dispatch MPG. We calculate dispatch miles per gallon (DMPG) as total completed dispatch miles divided by total gallons of fuel purchased over a 4-week period. These 4-week periods will always begin on a Sunday and end on a Saturday (midnight Phoenix time). We update this figure once per week, typically the following Monday.

The miles from the loads completed (emptied out) during that 4-week period will be counted. This includes loaded and empty miles. Fuel purchased for each load will only be counted when that load is emptied out.

The calculated dispatch MPG will often differ from the MPG displayed on the dash of the truck. We calculate it this way so that we can track "out of route" miles, potential theft of fuel, and proper functioning of equipment.

Trainers:  All the miles and all the fuel for the truck will be attributed to the trainer only. Trainer and trainee will no longer split the data, which means the trainee will not have a Dispatch MPG until they go solo.

Fuel Purchasing

An improvement from 6.7 to 7.0 mpg would save 640 gallons per year per driver.

In a fleet of 80 trucks, that is worth almost $230,000 per year (assuming $4.50 per gallon).

In a fleet of 3,000 it's worth well over $8.6 million of potential savings!

TOOLS FOR MANAGING FUEL

To use the DMPG Dashboard App, click on the link below and sign into the driver portal or visit the driver portal directly from the KT Mobile menu.

FUELING IN OREGON:  When fueling in Oregon it is very important that all drivers always press "Y" for the prompt, "Do you have an Oregon fuel permit?" After pressing "Y" enter your license plate and state. Failing to do this will result in Knight paying $.40/gallon more when all of our trucks are OR permitted.

FUEL BONUS

The monthly fuel bonus is part of the overall monthly bonus. The fuel bonus measurement period will always end on the last Saturday of the month. The measurement period will be comprised of a 4-week total.

MONTHLY FUEL BONUS

Add .01 Fuel component to the bonus based upon meeting DMPG threshold.  DMPG threshold may be reset monthly to adjust for seasonal changes & will start at 7.20 DMPG.

Must have at least 6,000 dispatched miles for the month to qualify for the fuel bonus.

HOW TO PURCHASE FUEL?

IDLE MANAGEMENT

Idling is a significant contributor to poor fuel economy. Our fleet is equipped with technology that helps driving associates manage their idle time. Below are videos describing the fuel optimization technology in each of our 2024 trucks.
